Tech Jam Rocks!
Published: August 17, 2009
On August 6, the Tampa Bay community celebrated the sixth annual Tech Jam at the St. Pete Times Forum. Tech Jam is the major source of funding for the TBTF Foundation, an organization near and dear to my heart. The purpose of Tech Jam has always been to raise money for financially disadvantaged kids that are interested in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
The event this year was truly remarkable. To know that a thousand technology and business professionals gave their time and money to help this community and its future leaders is amazing. I met several folks at the event that were laid off but still find themselves helping others. Despite the economy, we had just as many people attend this year as we did last year.
The event itself was a lot of fun… live music by the Jimmy James Band, cocktails, great food and entertainment stations. There was even a VIP lounge with casino games. For many folks there, it was also a chance to connect with others.
It’s clear the Tampa Bay area is very tight. People like it here and want to help make it a better place to live and work. Over 100 volunteers worked on this event for months. It sure has come a long way. Our first Tech Jam was held at a comedy club, not the St. Pete Times Forum, and we got 200 people to show and didn’t raise more than $1,000. This year we raised close to $70k! Can’t wait for next year.
