Here are some goals I have for next year…

Focus more on what I need to do, not necessarily what I like to do. We’re all guilty of this. I know I am. I’d rather stick a needle in my eye than look at another spreadsheet. I need to review spreadsheets to do analysis, planning, etc. But that’s not what I love. I’d much rather talk to customers or coach someone on our team. I never miss an opportunity to do that. But I have to constantly challenge myself to keep the priorities in order and do what’s best for the company. Am I always doing what’s necessary for this job? It’s a daily struggle and I want to improve.

Be better at conflict. It’s always easy to give great feedback but I struggle with giving negative feedback, especially when I like the person and I know they will take it hard. But if someone isn’t executing crystal clear it’s necessary for the company to handle it now. Instead of allowing myself to say I don’t feel like it today and avoiding it, I need to have the discussion. Again, focus more on what I need to do, not what I want to do.

Serving internal customers. Sometimes we get so busy servicing our external customers, we back burner our internal customers. It was a lot easier when we were a smaller company. We all think you can run a $100 million company with a spreadsheet and an 800 line. The reality is you need a lot more systems and people in place as you grow. We’ve made a lot of improvements this year, but I’d like to see us get better at providing the tools our people need. I think we underestimate the power of good internal customer service.
